The effect of ultraviolet fluorescence on a diamonds appearance has been hotly debated for at least the last decade. Opinions of even the most experienced trades people vary widely. Some say that blue fluorescence of different strengths enhances a diamonds overall appearance, others say that it has a negative effect. Researchers at the GIA conducted an experiment on the effects of long wave ultraviolet radiation and found that it can improve appearance rather than detract from it, especially in diamonds with faint yellow body colour. There are few exceptions in a minute number of cases diamonds with very strong fluorescence and special arrangement of clarity characteristics may appear slightly ‘cloudy’ or ‘oily’ but consumers rarely encounter such diamonds.
