This year is going past quickly and we have just arrived in May where this month’s birthstone is Emerald!

Emerald tends to have numerous inclusions and surface breaking fissures. Unlike diamond, where the loupe standard, i.e. 10X magnification, is used to grade clarity, emerald is graded by eye. Thus, if an emerald has no visible inclusions to the eye (assuming normal visual acuity) it is considered flawless.

The emerald is the sacred stone of the goddess Venus. It was thought to preserve love. The emerald has long been the symbol of hope.

The correct name for Emerald is Beryl, but there are different colors of beryl. Emerald green is known as the color as well as the stone.

May Gemstone poem – the Emerald

“Who first beholds the light of day
In spring’s sweet, flower month of May
And wears an Emerald all her life
Shall be a loved and a loving wife.”

February has arrived and brings with it the gemstone Amethyst as its birthstone.

Amethyst varies in colour from a pale lilac to a deep purple colour and even green! Ancient belief held that anyone who wore amethyst could not become intoxicated.

Amethyst is also the zodiac gemstone for Pisces.

The flower for the month of february is a violet or primrose, so for a lovely gift idea why not purchase an amethyst piece of jewellery and the flower to co-ordinate with the month??

Pop in and see us for many more february gift ideas as well as the ones shown on our website.

This month’s birthstone is more traditionally know as Topaz but can also be Citrine.

The Topaz gemstone comes in various different colours, the more popular colour you associate Topaz with is either a Sky Blue Topaz or a London Blue Topaz. The Citrine gemstones gets it’s name from its lemon-yellow colour. Although some citrine stones can have a slight yellow colour with a tint of a reddish-brown colour.

Topaz can be known as a soothing, empathetic stone that will direct energy to the place its most needed. Topaz is a promoter of truth and forgiveness.

Citrine has been known as the Stone of the Mind, as ancient cultures believed that placing a citrine stone on a elder man’s forehead it would increase his psychic power.

    The birthstone for August is

    Peridot

Peridot comes in various shades of green, starting from a pale yellow/green colour to a vibrant apple green.  The most rare forms of peridot are the Cat’s Eye Peridot and the Star Peridot.

The word peridot can also be know as Olivine. The word peridot is derived from the Greek word peridona which means to give richness.

Peridot is the national stone of Lanzarote, they call it Olivine.

Ancient Romans were very fond of the peridot stone and nicknamed the ‘evening emerald’ as peridot will not change colour even in artificial light.

Peridot is a great colour to mix with Sky and Navy blue colours, which works well with the current colour blocking trends.

We have various peridot gemstone items of jewellery in stock and can always cater to your bespoke requirments.

Here are a couple of our peridot jewellery range.
